NHS Highland’s catchment area comprises the largest and most sparsely populated part of the UK.  It is responsible for meeting the health needs of around 320,000 people living in the area, and provides a comprehensive range of primary, community-based and acute hospital services for the population.

NHS Highland is looking for one new member to join its Board.  As a non-executive member of the Board, you will be expected to play a central role in guiding the strategies which address the health and social care priorities and care needs of the resident population and monitor the performance of the Board in delivering these.  You will be offered the training you need to make a strong contribution.

In addition to the values highlighted above, we have identified a priority criterion for this post, which is of particular importance to NHS Highland at this time. 

  • Significant experience of community engagement and partnership working related to the delivery of health and social care in rural settings

You will also need to be able to demonstrate the following general requirements:

  • Ability to communicate effectively

  • Ability to provide scrutiny and challenge

  • Ability to analyse and review complex issues

  • Ability to contribute to longer term planning by seeing the ‘bigger picture’

You do not need to be an expert in health or have previous experience of being on a Board.  We are looking for people who have the capacity and commitment to develop their skills and to learn new skills they may require. 

Scottish Ministers particularly welcome applications from people with protected characteristics that are under-represented on the current Board, such as women, disabled people, those from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities and people aged under 50.

Remuneration:   £8,842 per annum (non-pensionable) is payable.  You will also receive reimbursement for all reasonable travel and subsistence costs and any reasonable dependant-carer expenses incurred whilst undertaking Board duties and for support required to help you carry out your duties effectively. 

Time commitment:  The time commitment will vary week to week, but on average the role will take up around 8 hours per week.  This time will be a mix of daytime Board meetings, committee meetings, reading documents and attending stakeholder events.  You should also demonstrate an adequate degree of flexibility to attend, either in person or remotely as appropriate, at a greater frequency subject to the Board’s ongoing business needs.  Should you be required to contribute more than the average 8 hours per week on a regular basis, then, at the discretion of the Board Chair, you may receive additional remuneration.

Appointment details:  The term of appointment will be for up to 4 years.  When a term comes to an end, the skills the Board requires will be reassessed.  If you satisfy the requirements of the new person specification at that time, and there is evidence of your effective performance, Scottish Ministers may consider reappointing you for a further term.  A non-executive member’s total period of appointment will not exceed eight years.

Location:  Meetings of the Board and its Committees will normally be held in Inverness, but may on occasion be held elsewhere in the NHS Board area.  A number of committee meetings allow for remote participation.  As we continue to live with Covid-19, currently meetings are generally held remotely using a virtual platform, for which you will receive appropriate training and support.  Going forward, the expectation is that the work will be a blend of virtual and physical meetings.

Interviews:  Interviews will be held on 27th and 28th October 2021.  We are planning for interviews to be held face to face, taking place in Inverness.  However, we will review this nearer the time and if Public Health guidance indicates it is not safe to do so, they will be held virtually via MS Teams.
