Regional Inshore Fisheries Groups Chairs appointments

Marine Scotland is seeking to appoint independent Chairs for the North & East Coast and West Coast Regional Inshore Fisheries Groups (RIFGs).

RIFGs are non-statutory bodies that are key to the Scottish Government’s vision of local management of our inshore fisheries. Their aim is to improve the management of Scotland’s inshore fisheries out to six nautical miles, and to give commercial inshore fishermen an effective voice in wider marine management developments.

Supporting the local management of fisheries is a key priority of a future strategy being developed for managing fisheries in Scotland. The Scottish Government believes RIFGs can take a more formal role in this area, by being given a statutory basis, and having their remit expanded to 12 nautical miles.

This is an exciting opportunity to support Marine Scotland to deliver more effective inshore fisheries management by getting involved in the work of the RIFGs.

Further information is available at www.ifgs.org.uk.

Information about the role

The Chair will have both a leadership and a representational role. They will lead and manage the RIFG’s business, provide clear direction on its remit and objectives, promote constructive debate and effective decision making at its meetings, and act as its spokesperson and representative. The Chair should have the ability to lead and obtain consensus within the RIFG and be able to gain an understanding of, and advise the group about, current Marine Scotland policies.

The Chair will set their own schedule and frequency for RIFG meetings, but it is expected that at least four executive committee meetings will be held each year. The Chair will also be expected to attend a number of meetings of any RIFG working groups operating in their area.

The Chair will be expected to work on a part-time basis of up to three days per week. An honorarium of £275 per day will be paid, and travel & subsistence costs will also be reimbursed. The length of appointment will be for an initial period of 12 months, with the opportunity for this to be extended.

Applicants must have experience of chairing boards or committees. Knowledge of the fishing industry, particularly the inshore sector, is desirable but not essential.

How to apply

Completed applications should be sent by email to inshore@gov.scot or by post to RIFG Chair Appointments, Marine Scotland, Area 1B South, Victoria Quay, Edinburgh, EH6 6QQ, no later than Friday 25 October 2019.

Applicants may apply for one or both appointments, however no individual will be appointed as Chair of more than one RIFG.
