Closing date:11 February 2019 at midnight

Would you like the opportunity to play a significant role in the management and development of Scotland’s canals and the regeneration of their surrounding areas?

We are looking to appoint three new members to the Board for Scottish Canals who can provide skills and experience, in one or more of the following, social and economic regeneration or tourism and leisure (preferably with water based experience) or corporate finance and governance (including knowledge and experience of audit and risk to enable them to Chair the Audit and Risk Committee), to ensure successful delivery of the organisations corporate objectives and strategic priorities and who can help the Board to review and develop its policies and structures.

Scotland's canals provide a stunning setting for sailing, boating and paddle sports.  As well as this primary role, they stimulate multi-million pound regeneration and development, support Scotland’s tourism and destination economy, contribute significantly to the active living agenda, biodiversity, heritage, education and enable skills and confidence building projects in some of Scotland’s most disadvantaged communities.

The new Board members will be expected to make a wide-ranging, direct and relevant contribution to the management of the organisation, as well as contributing towards the organisations role in social and economic regeneration, working with tourism and leisure development and providing financial advice and assurance to the Board. As a member of the Board you will play an important role in assisting the Chair in setting a clear strategy for Scottish Canals by:-

  • providing strategic direction while working within a regulated environment;

  • maintaining high standards of corporate governance, ensuring the propriety, regulatory, economy, efficiency and effectiveness of Scottish Canals’ operations in alignment with the wider Scottish Government objectives and policies;

  • communicating effectively both within Scottish Canals and on behalf of Scottish Canals externally to a wide variety of stakeholders and communication between the board and Scottish Ministers;

  • developing and agreeing Scottish Canals’ Corporate Plan and strategic direction, prioritising business opportunities as well as a broad range of other responsibilities including pay and employment, health and safety, communications and marketing, customer care, general stewardship, and corporate governance issues; and

 Closing Date for applications is 11 February 2019.
