Experience of Digital Transformation


NHS Lanarkshire, NHS 24 and the Scottish Ambulance Service are each looking for one member to join their Boards.  You can choose to apply for any one or more of these Boards through one application. 


As NHS Scotland continues to develop its use of technology to reshape and improve services, support person-centred care, and improve outcomes, we have identified a specific priority criterion for these posts as this is of particular importance to these Boards at this time.

The work undertaken by NHS Boards across the country provides the strategic framework to ensure that the management of our healthcare is more efficient, more accountable and more effective.  These Boards bring together key partners, who deliver our healthcare.  One of the main functions of these different bodies is to put government policies into practice in the best way possible.  


NHS Lanarkshire is one of the 14 territorial Boards and they are responsible for the protection and the improvement of their population’s health, and for the delivery of frontline healthcare services.  Key priorities for the Board as they reshape their services to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic include maximising the opportunities of digital transformation and innovation to provide safer, smarter and more efficient models of care, refreshing their Healthcare Strategy “Achieving Excellence” and delivering their exciting vision to build a new state of the art digital University Hospital Monklands. NHS Lanarkshire is looking for one new member to join its Board.


NHS 24 is responsible for the delivery of clinical assessment and triage, health advice and information by telephone and online services to the population of Scotland 24 hours a day, every day of the year.  There have been many significant developments over the last twelve months and NHS 24 has been the first point of contact for people who may have Covid-19 symptoms.  They offer a range of mental health support services and are now the first point of contact for urgent care services.  NHS 24 is looking for one new member to join its Board.


The Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS), at the frontline of NHS Scotland, provides an emergency and non-emergency service to people across mainland Scotland and its island communities.  SAS plays a leading role in the national design and delivery of emergency and urgent care, using advanced digital technology to ensure a timely and appropriately resourced response to 999 calls. Also to those who require non-emergency ambulance transport to and from hospitals and clinics. 999 patients with immediately life threatening conditions are safely conveyed to hospital and increasingly, SAS ambulance professionals are providing “see & treat” care in patients’ own homes for non-life-threatening emergencies. Journeys to hospital are avoided, patient experience is enhanced and whole-system emergency care provision made more effective and efficient. SAS is looking for one new member to join its Board.


As a non-executive member of these Boards, you will have a key role in supporting the delivery of the organisation’s strategic direction in addition to contributing to scrutinising performance, and discharging governance and accountability functions.  You will be offered the training you need to make a strong contribution.

These values, as outlined in the Everyone Matters: 2020 Workforce Vision, are: care and compassion; dignity and respect; openness, honesty and responsibility; and, quality and teamwork and guide the work of the Board in all that it does.  As a member of theses Boards, you will not only need to have the right skills, knowledge and experience for the role, but also be able to demonstrate behaviour aligned to these values.

You do not need to be an expert in health or have previous experience of being on a Board.

Scottish Ministers particularly welcome applications from people with protected characteristics who are under-represented on Scotland’s public bodies, such as women, disabled people, LGBTI+ people, those from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities and people aged under 50.

Remuneration:   £8,842 per annum (non-pensionable) is payable.  You will also receive reimbursement for all reasonable travel and subsistence costs and any reasonable dependant-carer expenses incurred whilst undertaking Board duties and for support required to help you carry out your duties effectively. 


Time commitment:  The time commitment will vary week to week, but on average the role will take up around 8 hours per week.  This time will be a mix of daytime Board meetings, committee meetings, reading documents and attending stakeholder events.  You should also demonstrate an adequate degree of flexibility to attend at a greater frequency subject to the Board’s ongoing business needs.  Should you be required to contribute more than the average 8 hours per week on a regular basis, then, at the discretion of the Board Chair, you may receive additional remuneration.


Appointment details:  The term of appointment will be for up to 4 years.  When a term comes to an end, the skills the Board requires will be reassessed.  If you satisfy the requirements of the new person specification at that time, and there is evidence of your effective performance, Scottish Ministers may consider reappointing you for a further term.  A non-executive member’s total period of appointment will not exceed eight years.


Location:  The meetings for Lanarkshire NHS Board are normally held in Bothwell, Lanarkshire, but may on occasion be held elsewhere in the NHS Board area.  Both NHS 24 and the Scottish Ambulance Service are national Boards.  However the majority of meetings for NHS 24 will normally be held in Glasgow and Edinburgh.  The meetings for the SAS Board are normally held in Edinburgh.  As we continue to live with Covid-19, currently meetings are generally held remotely using a virtual platform, for which you will receive appropriate training and support.


Interviews:  Interviews will be held on 10th, 11th and 14th June.  Given the uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic and any restrictions which might be in place, we are currently planning for the interviews to be conducted via MS Teams.  We will review this nearer the time and if Public Health guidance indicates it is safe to do so, we may consider holding these face to face, which would be in Edinburgh.
